NEW YORK - A few thoughts here about the recent controversial immigration issue in the state of Arizona that has dominated the headlines. More so, how the world of fun and games, known as sports has reacted. As a frequent visitor to the Grand Canyon state and with numerous friends affected by the law, this issue needed some attention.

There is no right or wrong here because on one hand there is an influx of illegal immigrants in the greater Phoenix metro area. And then there are those who are rightfully American citizens of Latino descent who earn wages and strive for a continued and better life.

And those who are taxpayers, and good citizens with values, will be subjected to being stopped and questioned by local law enforcement authorities because of their ethnicity. That, on the other hand leaves to question as to how constitutional this Arizona immigration law is.

As an observer it has been seen in the desert. Hard workers of Latino descent they are, employed in restaurants, schools, assisting in building of new homes and businesses in the valley. They are what America stands for when it comes to equality and opportunity.

So when the world of sports reacts, this has to be a major issue that has gone beyond expectations. In the last week there has been a call from a Major League Baseball manager for ballplayers of Latino descent to boycott the All-Star game in Phoenix next July.

There has been reaction from organizers of the Fiesta Bowl, a major college football game that is played in the town of Glendale, for the United States Government to reconsider the law. The Arizona Cardinals football team of the NFL expressed negativity to the law as did the NBA basketball Phoenix Suns.

Of course when it comes to sports, and issues of concern to our nation, we tend to always believe that this is our diversion from the troubles of a bad economy or unrest around the world. We all recall how the events of September 11, 2001 were briefly tamed with the resumption of a Major League Baseball game.

But last week prior to his Chicago White Sox meeting the Yankees in New York, Sox manager Ozzie Guillen made a public statement referring to the Arizona immigration law as racial profiling. Furthermore, Guillen reiterated, as is fact, a majority of MLB rosters are dominated by players of Latino descent.

Ballplayers, as Guillen says are people also, who would be subjected to being stopped and searched. Well highly unlikely, as baseball does have a well reputed security detail around their teams. Players usually travel together and have proper identification with them. They are reminded to have their passports available for an upcoming road trip to Toronto Canada and that has been seen on billboards in clubhouses of teams in the American League.

Regardless of what Guillen says, or what other professional college or sports organizations believe, remember, sports has always been that diversion. A way to keep our minds and beliefs for the moment away from turmoil as this immigration law will become.

Let this work itself out. And for those who feel they are being discriminated and profiled incorrectly, you are justified to warrant your cause for justice. Sports and politics were never meant to meet on the same playing field and by the time that All-Star game gets to Phoenix surly there will be a compromise for all.

Because that is what America is supposed to be all about.

On Tuesday, the National Football League unveiled its 2009 regular season schedule and both occupants of the present Meadowlands/Giants Stadium (depending on which team is playing at home that particular day) will receive national exposure a total of seven times. The Giants will bid farewell to their home since 1976 with a Sunday Night Football contest on October 25 versus the defending NFC champions Arizona Cardinals and another NBC game versus their division rivals, the Philadelphia Eagles, on December 13.

The Jets? Without the fanfare of Brett Favre and their December collapse, they will have to go on the road for their two prime time affairs - an ESPN Monday Night Football game at Miami (October 12) and in Montreal for what is considered a Buffalo Bills home game on Thursday, December 3 on the NFL Network.

For the sideline boss of Gang Green, finally seeing where and when his team will be was a sign of good things. “We got the schedule today and I am fired up about the coming season,” Rex Ryan said. “This will be my first season as a head coach and the schedule is filled with challenges, but our coaching staff and players have been working hard and I know that we will be ready.”

On the plate in Week One for the Jets is a road game versus the Texans, the first time in 22 years that they have opened up the season in the big state. Back then it was the Houston Oilers on the short end of a 20-0 score at the ‘Eighth Wonder of the World,’ otherwise known as the Astrodome.

The home opener a week later will bring a familiar foe into East Rutherford as the Patriots make the trip south for the fourth consecutive year. Things do not get any easier as the Tennessee Titans are up next and they will be looking to avenge the Jets’ Week 12 win last year that snapped their 10-game winning streak. Other notable games on the schedule are at Indianapolis (December 27) and - barring any post-season home games - the last dance at the old building on January 3 versus Cincinnati.

In 2010, both teams will move into the brand new stadium right next door and the Giants would love to close out an era with a better showing than last year’s Divisional Round playoff loss to the Eagles. They open things up on September 13 at home versus the Redskins then go on a three-game road trip to Dallas, Tampa Bay and Kansas City.

Big Blue will have the evening game on the NFL Network on Thanksgiving Day at Denver then have three division games after that, at home versus Dallas and Philadelphia and at Washington. A tough stretch, indeed, something not lost on head coach Tom Coughlin, who noted the advantage of having the bye in Week 10.

“We play nine games before the bye - I think that’s better for us,” he said to reporters, commenting on the early Week 4 week off in 2008. “The bye gives the players, I think, an opportunity to play a long stretch against high-quality opponents and then have a little break.”

For the second consecutive season, the G-Men finish up at Minnesota (January 3) and will look to springboard into the playoffs on a higher note than last year when they lost by a field goal at the final gun.

Of course, the NFL’s flexible scheduling in the season’s final seven weeks make all of those games tentative and officially considered “To Be Announced” for a starting time. Depending on where both teams are at that point in the season will determine their schedule, with NBC getting the opportunity to switch their night game to show a better match-up than what was put on the charts months in advance.

If Ryan and Coughlin’s troops do their jobs, both teams may end up with more national games than the seven planned now. First things first, though.

TAMPA, FL – Where do you start? Super Bowl XLIII turned out to be a much better game than originally expected and included a momentum-swinging flurry in the waning minutes that rivaled a similar one a year ago. Both teams picked themselves up off the mat on more than one occasion on this evening in Tampa, but the Pittsburgh Steelers landed the final blow.

When Larry Fitzgerald went 64 yards on a pass from Kurt Warner to give the Arizona Cardinals a 23-20 lead with 2:47 left in the game, it appeared that the vagabond franchise would win its first championship since the days of the Nuremberg trials. But Ben Roethlisberger directed the Steelers to the game-winning drive by dissecting the Cardinal secondary along with game MVP Santonio Holmes. The wide receiver’s leaping grab over double coverage in the right corner of the end zone was even more impressive when considering that he was able to keep both feet in bounds. Holmes finished with 9 catches for 131 yards and one touchdown.

“It was a play that we drew up that we were hoping to get open in the back of the corner,” said Holmes. “The defensive back bit up on the short route and Ben (Roethlisberger) held onto the ball long enough to get it to me.”

Arizona fought back from a second quarter 10-0 deficit and were poised to go into the locker room at halftime either tied or in the lead. With the score 10-7 and only 18 seconds remaining in the half, Pittsburgh linebacker James Harrison picked off a Warner throw intended for Anquan Boldin and rumbled down the field 100 yards for the score. It set a Super Bowl record for the longest interception return.

Many teams would have been deflated by the sudden turn of events, but Arizona held Pittsburgh in check and Warner directed them on an eight-play, 87-yard scoring drive culminating with a one-yard pass to Fitzgerald. A subsequent safety on a Jeff Hartwig holding penalty in the end zone made it a four-point game. The Cardinals received the free kick, setting up Fitzgerald’s long touchdown run and, unfortunately, false hope for many.

“Yeah, I was confident we were going to be able to get a stop and we were going to be champions,” the wideout said. “I never lost faith. Sometimes things just don’t go your way.”

The Steelers became the first franchise to win six Super Bowls, and head coach Mike Tomlin now has a title in only his second year at the helm. “I’m not concerned about my personal milestones,” he said. “I just want to contribute to the legacy that is the Pittsburgh Steelers.”

By accomplishing what he did, Tomlin now becomes an important part of that legacy.

Former Hofstra offensive lineman Willie Colon will look to become just the fourth Pride alumnus to capture a Super Bowl ring if his Pittsburgh Steelers beat the underdog Arizona Cardinals in Super Bowl XLIII Sunday in Tampa Bay.

Colon started all 33 games at right tackle his last three seasons at Hofstra from 2003-05, earning first-team I-AA All-American honors after his senior season. The Bronx native got the attention of the Steelers, which drafted Colon in the fourth round and made him its starting right tackle with two games left in his rookie campaign.

After being inactive for the first 14 games of his professional career, Colon has started every game at right tackle since then, helping Pittsburgh move within one game of winning its NFL-record sixth Super Bowl title. Speaking to reporters from Raymond James Stadium, Colon said the offensive line is looking to show the world it is not a liability despite taking criticism during the regular season.

“As a unit we have been through so much,” Colon said. “From injuries to guys dealing with serious off- the-field issues, from our unit getting bashed week in and week out no matter how good or bad we played. From a standpoint all that fire that we took motivated us to get better. We all came together as a unit and realized we all had to be accountable for ourselves.”

Colon will be charged with keeping quarterback Ben Roethlisberger upright and springing running back Willie Parker for big gains. The 25-year-old came to the Steelers the year following the franchise’s Super Bowl XL victory against Seattle in 2006 and said even with the veterans around to give advice, he will still be nervous come opening kickoff.

“I think every day that goes by the tension builds up more and more,” Colon said. “My biggest thing is the ability to calm down and open my eyes. I get so worked up. When I am on the sideline about to go on I have to suck it in, leave it out and realize it is a regular game so I can execute. For me personally, this is a great experience, but I don’t want to go home without the trophy so I am going to be as much of a help as I can.”

Only three other former Hofstra players have played a role on a Super Bowl contender. John Schmitt, who had his number retired at James M. Shuart Stadium in the fall, was the starting center for the Jets during one of sports’ most famous championship games, anchoring a line for Joe Namath in Super Bowl III.

Schmitt (class of 1964) was joined on that Jets team by defensive back Mike D’Amato, who graduated Hofstra four years after Schmitt and was a rookie on a Gang Green team that shocked the heavily favored Baltimore Colts at the Orange Bowl.

After watching his No. 77 go up on the façade of Margiotta Hall during the Pride’s homecoming win over Rhode Island, Schmitt said he was proud of becoming the first Hofstra player to make it to the NFL and still wears the ring from what is still the only title in Jets history. Schmitt played for the Jets from 1964-73 and was named to the All-Pro team in 1968 and 1969.

“I just wanted to make the team,” Schmitt recalled about his first training camp. “No one from Hofstra had ever made anything.

“When the Jets signed me, they didn’t need any tackles. They needed me as a center, but I had no knowledge of how to play or snap field goals; anything like that. It was a heck of an adjustment. Nobody helps you when you go to the pros.”

Nearly 40 years later, receiver Ricky Bryant earned a championship ring with the Patriots, playing on New England’s practice squad during the 2004 season, which culminated with a victory over Philadelphia in Super Bowl XXXIX.

The Pride could add a fourth name to its list of NFL champions. Dave Cohen, Hofstra’s head coach, came to Hofstra the year after Colon graduated. But Cohen was Delaware’s defensive coordinator in 2005, when the Pride out-lasted the Blue Hens, 10-6. Having to game-plan against Colon as a coach for a conference rival showed Cohen the lineman’s potential for succeeding at the next level.

“I knew coaching against Will in 2003, 2004 and 2005 that he was special,” Cohen said. “Will was a dominating player from the time he was a sophomore and has enjoyed equal success since his graduation in the NFL.”

Former Hofstra coach Joe Gardi, whose last season as Colon’s senior year, helped the Cardinal Hayes High School pass-rushing force switch from the defensive line to the offensive side. Colon red-shirted his first season and played in just one game as a freshman before becoming a stalwart on the right side starting his sophomore year.

“It was great for me at Hofstra,” Colon said to Newsday earlier this week. “I came away with so much, and now here I am, at the center of the [football] world. . . . Go Hofstra.”

Colon and New Orleans Saints receiver Marques Colston were each drafted out of Hofstra in 2006. Colon made the playoffs in his second year and Colston has amassed 3,000 receiving yards and set a league record for most receptions by any player in their first two seasons with 168.

“It is an honor for the Hofstra football family to have one of our own to be starting in the upcoming Super Bowl,” Cohen said. “Willie Colon represents what Hofstra Football stands for: earning a degree, being a good person and having great work ethic.”

Colon credited his family’s support for putting him in position to possibly hoist the Vince Lombardi Trophy and reach the pinnacle of his profession.

“It’s a dream come true,” he said. “I was a project kid, growing up on the streets and running the streets in New York. But I’m just sticking to my dream and am staying good to myself. It’s a blessing. I give much credit to my mom for sticking by my side through the rough times. I know people from back home are cheering me on.

“My father is Puerto Rican. He’s a proud Hispanic who raised me to be proud of our last name and be proud of where we came from. Everywhere I go I try to represent somehow, some way not only for my family but for the Latino community. Everything is going well for me right now.”
